Frequently Asked questions
Clarity for High-stakes Engineering Decisions
These FAQs address the questions we are most often asked by leaders responsible for high stakes engineering decisions – before investment, during intervention, and ahead of exit.
About 7Q® & Our Role
What does 7Q actually do?
7Q is an Operating Partner and Advisory Firm focused on protecting and creating enterprise value in business. We provide the technical, commercial, and governance underpinning required to make engineering led investments, transformations, and exits deliverable – not just ambitious.
How is 7Q different from a consultancy?
7Q does not provide generic consulting services, frameworks, or PMO overlays. We operate alongside leadership and capital as a senior peer, intervening directly where clarity, accountability, and delivery matter. Our work is evidence based, accountable, and tied to outcomes rather than slide decks or templates.
Is 7Q a PMO or transformation consultancy?
No. While governance and delivery discipline are part of our work, 7Q is not a PMO or transformation consultancy. We focus on decision quality, technical reality, and value protection, particularly where capital investment, engineering maturity, or exit value is at stake.
Who does 7Q work with?
7Q works with PE Firms, Capital Investors, Boards, Founders & CEO/ CFOs, responsible for high-stakes engineering decisions. We are typically engaged by private equity firms, shareholders, and leadership teams operating in advanced engineering environments where technical outcomes materially affect enterprise value, delivery confidence, and investment returns. Visit our Who We Work With page to learn more.
Which sectors does 7Q work in?
7Q works across advanced engineering and technology led sectors where technical delivery, capital investment, and governance are tightly linked. Our experience spans aerospace, automotive, motorsport, defence, clean tech, hydrogen and energy transition, electronics, rail, advanced manufacturing, IOT and construction. These are environments where engineering decisions materially affect enterprise value, risk, and long term performance. Visit our Who We Work With page to learn more.
Do you work internationally?
Yes 7Q Ltd works across the UK and internationally, both on-site and remotely.
What is the 7Q Method™?
The 7Q Method™ is our framework for Change Governance. The Method contains three pillars, 7Q Plan™, 7Q Communicate and 7Q Tracker™, through which plans that are understood with clear purpose are shared, understood and tracked thoroughly during their lifecycle. Visit our 7Q Method page to learn more.
Innovation, Investment & Engineering Bets
What are “future engineering bets”?
Future engineering bets are decisions about product direction, technology platforms, R&D investment, and engineering capability that materially affect valuation and long term value. 7Q helps ensure these bets are grounded in technical reality, commercial logic, and deliverability – not assumption.
When should investors involve 7Q in an engineering investment?
7Q can be engaged during the M&A phase, post-acquisition, or when capital is being deployed to grow, scale or exit, where value depends on technical claims, product maturity, or future R&D outcomes. We provide independent technical due diligence and engineering scrutiny so investment decisions stand up under delivery pressure and future exits.
Do you work only with Private Equity?
No. While we work closely with Private Equity firms, we also partner with Founders, Family Offices, Boards, and strategic investors responsible for advanced engineering businesses. What matters is not the ownership model, but capital exposure and decision risk.
Technical Due Diligence & R&D Governance
What makes 7Q’s technical due diligence different?
7Q’s due diligence goes beyond static assessments. We focus on deliverability – how engineering claims, product maturity, capability, IP, and governance translate into real commercial outcomes post investment. Many issues we identify are missed by traditional financial or M&A led processes.
Do you assess R&D strategy and governance?
Yes. R&D strategy & governance is a core strength of 7Q. We assess whether R&D spend is genuinely aligned to value creation, product strategy, future exit logic, and the current ability to deliver it.
Do you work with “In Flight” programmes?
Yes. 7Q frequently intervenes where programmes or portfolios are already underway but delivery confidence has eroded and investors are getting anxious. We provide rapid diagnosis, establish one version of the truth, and reset governance and accountability where required.
Intervention, Governance & Delivery Risk
When is it time to bring in 7Q for intervention?
7Q is typically brought in when confidence in delivery, reporting, or accountability has weakened and value is at risk. This might follow acquisition, during transformation, or when governance exists on paper but not in practice.
Do you take operational responsibility?
We work inside the business alongside the C-suite, but we do not replace management. We provide external authority, technical judgement, and governance discipline to stabilise delivery and restore control – while keeping accountability with leadership and providing recommendations to the Board or shareholders.
How quickly can 7Q intervene?
7Q engagements are designed for rapid diagnosis and decisive action. We prioritise early clarity and measurable progress, especially where boards or investors require fast confidence restoration.
Growth, Exit & Enterprise Value
How does 7Q support exit planning?
7Q helps businesses become market ready, ensuring technical maturity, operational independence, and governance all support the valuation journey. We work with trade sales, PE investment, MBOs, and succession scenarios.
Do you help increase exit multiples?
Yes. We focus on the real levers buyers care about: deliverable technology, protected IP, scalable engineering capability, governance maturity, credible growth pathways, P&L growth, acquisitions, bolt ons and mergers.
How do you balance value creation with legacy?
7Q takes legacy seriously. For founder‑led and heritage engineering businesses, we act as a steward – ensuring that exit or transition protects reputation, culture, and technical standards alongside financial outcomes.
Engagement & Fit
When is 7Q not the right fit?
7Q is not the right fit if a business is looking for:
• Generic consulting support
• Templates, PMO setup, or methodology roll outs
• Consultants to develop middle management and team leaders
Our work is most effective where decisions are high stakes, at the Board level, and outcomes make a material difference to enterprise value.
How do engagements typically start?
Most engagements begin with a focused conversation to understand the decision context, risks, and expectations. From there, we define the appropriate level of intervention or advisory support.

Still have questions?
If you’re facing a high‑stakes engineering decision and want an informed, independent perspective, the most effective next step is a focused conversation.
